The Hidden Treasure of Pirin and Maleshevska Mountains
Stepping over the Struma River, Tisata Reserve is nestled at the foot of Pirin Mountain on one end and Maleshevska Mountain on the other. This is a true natural treasure, captivating visitors with its biodiversity and pristine nature. Declared a protected area in 1949, the reserve is home to rich flora and fauna, including rare and endangered species.
What can you see in Tisata Reserve?

Juniper tree: The main attraction of the reserve is the juniper tree (Juniperus excelsa), a relict species reaching up to 15 meters in height. Some of the specimens are hundreds of years old, witnesses to bygone eras.
Diverse flora: The reserve is characterized by flora exotic to the country. In addition to juniper, there are numerous other tree and shrub species, including downy oak, Oriental hornbeam, winter oak, hop-hornbeam, black pine, dogwood, red juniper, and jasmine.

Rich fauna: Located on the migratory route of birds, it is home and nesting place for over 100 bird species. In the early morning hours, you can enjoy the choral singing of dozens of different species. Birds nesting in Tisata Reserve: Spanish rock thrush; Rock partridge; Great olive warbler; Lesser black-headed warbler; Short-toed eagle and others. The palette of birds of prey is also impressive, with black and griffon vultures often flying over the steep slopes of Tisata. It is one of the places with the most protected reptile species in Bulgaria. Here you can find species included in the Red Book of Bulgaria: leopard snake, cat snake, striped snake, Turkish boa, red-bellied toad, spiny-tailed tortoise, and spur-tailed tortoise.
When to visit Tisata Reserve?
The most suitable time of year is spring, which comes here earlier than is typical for the country. As early as March, temperatures rise, the sun’s rays warm pleasantly, and the reserve awakens from its winter sleep. The trees are adorned with delicate green leaves and the air is filled with the scent of blossoming jasmine. Lizards crawl out to bask on the rocks, birds sing merrily, and butterflies flutter among the branches. As you ascend from the side of Maleshevska Mountain, a breathtaking view of the snow-capped Pirin peaks unfolds.
